معرفی
Susanne Brix is a Professor at the Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where she leads the Section for Medical Biotechnology and the Disease Systems Immunology research group under the DTU Microbes Initiative. Her work integrates systems biology, immunology, and microbiome science to investigate host-microbiota interactions in lifestyle-related diseases such as asthma, allergy, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and functional somatic disorders.
- PhD in Immunology, 2005
- MSc in Chemical Engineering/Biotechnology, 1998
Her research focuses on early-life immune programming, immune regulation at mucosal barriers (gut and lungs), and the gut-brain axis. She employs cutting-edge technologies such as high-throughput single-cell analysis, proteomics, and bioinformatics to profile immune cell heterogeneity, signaling pathways, and microbial metabolites. Her group has made significant contributions to understanding asthma endotypes and microbiome-immune crosstalk.
Recent publications (2024–2025) highlight her interdisciplinary work, spanning from maternal immune markers affecting child cognition to computational methods in spatial transcriptomics. These studies reflect a strong trend in integrating clinical data with molecular and systems-level analysis.
Susanne Brix is actively involved in major research initiatives and supervises multiple PhD students. Her scientific contributions are widely recognized, with over 250 publications and active engagement in national and international research networks.
- Independent Research Fund Denmark – Member (since 2021)
She serves as main supervisor on several active PhD projects and is a principal investigator on interdisciplinary grants, including those exploring postbiotics, sugar beet components, and antiviral immunity in pig models. Her research is supported by DTU and collaborative consortia, reflecting strong grant acquisition and team leadership capabilities. She is also involved in public outreach, with her work featured in media on topics such as birth season and immune development.
The Disease Systems Immunology group, led by Brix, operates at the intersection of immunology, microbiome science, and systems biology, contributing significantly to DTU’s strategic focus on health and sustainability.
