Susannah Ottaway is the Laird Bell Professor of History at Carleton College, where she has taught since 1998. She holds an MA and PhD from Brown University and specializes in British and Irish social history, with particular focus on public health, poverty, and institutional structures in the eighteenth century. Her research employs interdisciplinary approaches including digital humanities methodologies.
Her scholarly affiliations include the North American Conference on British Studies, American Historical Association, American Friends of the Institute for Historical Research, and Social Science History Association.
Professor Ottaway directs major grant initiatives: a 4-year Mellon-funded program 'Public Works: Arts and Humanities, Connecting Communities' (co-directed with Kelly Connole), and contributes to the NEH Digital Humanities Advancement Grant 'Castle to Classrooms: Developing an Irish Castle in Virtual Reality'. She teaches courses spanning public health history, Irish studies, Enlightenment thought, and comparative history.
Honors include the endowed Laird Bell Professorship recognizing her scholarly contributions.
