Susannah Bain is a Departmental Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on socio-political connections and environmental dynamics in Mediterranean urban centers during the later Middle Ages, particularly in Italy and Sicily. She employs comparative methodologies, analyzing narrative texts and archival practices to explore how political elites shaped regional developments through communication.
Dr. Bain holds an undergraduate degree from University College London (UCL) and pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford. She is affiliated with multiple research centers, including the Oxford Centre for European History, Oxford Centre for Global History, and Oxford Centre for Economic and Social History.
Her research interests span cultural history, economic and social history, and the interplay between politics and environment in medieval urban contexts. She has taught tutorials on medieval Europe, the Crusades, and disciplinary approaches to history, emphasizing transnational and imperial frameworks. Supported by prestigious scholarships, she is an Early Career Member of the Royal Historical Society.
