Susanna P. Campbell is an Associate Professor and Provost Associate Professor at American University's School of International Service (SIS), where she directs the Research on International Policy Implementation Lab (RIPIL). Her work focuses on research-to-policy translation, international aid in conflict zones, and global governance. She has conducted fieldwork in Burundi, DRC, Nepal, Sudan, South Sudan, and East Timor. Campbell holds a PhD from Tufts University and has held postdoctoral positions at Columbia University and The Graduate Institute in Geneva.
Her research has been supported by grants from the Carnegie Corporation, NSF, Swiss National Science Foundation, and others. Notable awards include SIS Scholar-Teacher of the Year (2018) and the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship (2023). Her 2018 book *Global Governance and Local Peace* challenges assumptions about international peacebuilding accountability, arguing that localized staff actions are critical for success.
Recent grants include a $5.7M NSF grant (2024-2028) on evidence-based policymaking and a $500K Carnegie grant (2024) on security programs in disordered states. Her lab (RIPIL) partners with governments and NGOs to translate research into policy solutions.
