Susana Zapke

Susana Zapke is a Professor of Historical Musicology at the Music and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna, where she has been since 2009. She previously held academic positions at the University of Cologne (1993/98), University of Salamanca (1998/2000), and the BBVA Foundation in Madrid (2003/08).

• Education: MA in Historical Musicology and Literature (University of Cologne, 1990), Doctorate (University of Hamburg, 1993), Habilitation (University of Salzburg, 2009)

Research Focus: Medieval music traditions (Visigothic, Carolingian, Aquitanian), music notation history (9th–15th century and 19th–20th century), urban music studies with emphasis on Vienna’s cultural-political symbolism, and the intellectual history of exiled composers.

Key Projects: Leading Music Mapping Vienna: Exploring a City (FWF-PEEK AR384-G24), Notation: Imagination and Translation (cooperation with IFK and MA7), and Teaching and Learning Communities: The Vienna Music School during National Socialism (cooperation with University of Vienna).
