Dr. Susan van Hees is an Assistant Professor in Innovation Studies at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University. Her work bridges Science and Technology Studies with practical applications in health and ageing innovations. She actively contributes to both European (Horizon) and national research projects while teaching in bachelor's and master's programs.
Van Hees specializes in sustainable healthcare, gerontechnology, and the social implications of artificial intelligence in ageing societies. Her research examines how innovations are developed, implemented, and given meaning by various stakeholders, particularly focusing on the communication gap between older citizens and technology developers. She employs both traditional qualitative methods and innovative co-creation approaches in her work, including developing research games to help participants articulate their stories.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on the intersection of technology, ageing, and social dynamics, with particular attention to valuation practices in innovation, the implementation of medical technologies, and creating inclusive approaches to digital health. Her work spans from theoretical frameworks on ageing and place to practical applications in real-world settings like the GATEKEEPER and IDEA4RC projects.
