Koen Beumer

Dr. Koen Beumer is an Associate Professor in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) at Utrecht University's Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development within the Faculty of Geosciences. His research focuses on the societal implications of science and technology, with empirical emphasis on food and agriculture technologies and their impact on inequality.

Beumer holds a PhD from Maastricht University. His educational background includes positions at multiple Dutch institutions, building expertise in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of technology, society, and sustainability.

His research spans several critical domains including governance of emerging technologies, sustainable agriculture, innovation dynamics, and food systems. Beumer examines how scientific and technological developments affect social inequality, with particular attention to agricultural biotechnology, crop breeding innovations, and sustainability transitions. His work bridges social science perspectives with practical applications in food security and agricultural development, especially concerning smallholder farmers in the Global South.

Beumer's recent publications reveal a strong focus on responsible innovation in agricultural technologies, particularly regarding potato breeding, gene editing, and sustainable food systems. His work increasingly addresses the intersection of technological innovation with social justice, examining how innovations can be designed to benefit marginalized communities and address systemic inequalities. There's a clear trend toward examining governance frameworks that ensure equitable access to agricultural innovations while considering diverse stakeholder perspectives.

Beumer has received significant research funding from multiple sources including NWO-LTP, NWO-WOTRO, NWO-KIC, and the National Growth Fund, particularly for the CropXR project which examines innovation dynamics in smart breeding technologies.

As a Work Package Leader for WP-C7 on innovation dynamics and societal impact in the CropXR project, Beumer coordinates research into societal implications of smart breeding technologies. He is also involved in the Scientific Advisory Committee and CropXR Education initiatives. His leadership extends to chairing education committees of the national research school WTMC and serving on the board of Future Food Utrecht.

Beumer is actively engaged with interdisciplinary research teams examining systemic barriers to AI in plant breeding, implications of genetic resource access, societal needs and concerns regarding agricultural technologies, and fundamental questions about resilience in food systems. His work emphasizes creating mutual understanding between plant sciences, data sciences, and social sciences through interdisciplinary collaboration.
