Harm van den Heiligenberg is a part-time Researcher at Utrecht University's Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development within the Faculty of Geosciences. He specializes in Innovation Studies and coordinates a research group investigating spatial context conditions relevant for developing the province of Utrecht as a 'living lab' for global transitions.
His research focuses on sustainability transitions, geography of science and innovation, and sustainable innovation. He analyzes spatial conditions enabling experiments with sustainability innovations and early diffusion of innovations in European regions, with particular attention to urban contexts and regional development.
His publications consistently explore the relationship between spatial context and sustainability experimentation, with a focus on how regional characteristics enable or constrain innovation diffusion. His work bridges theoretical frameworks of sustainability transitions with practical applications in urban and regional planning.
Harm works part-time at the university while also serving as a strategic policy advisor for innovation and sustainability at the Province of Utrecht. He has organized and participated in numerous academic events, including the 14th International Sustainability Transitions (IST) Conference in 2023 where he served as an organizer.
His research group carries out action-oriented evaluations of experimental sustainability initiatives in the Utrecht region, aiming to accelerate the sustainability transition toward a better world through both academic research and practical policy implementation.
