Susan Wehry, M.D., is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Geriatric Medicine at the University of New England’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. She serves as Director of AgingME, Maine’s Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), and Principal Investigator of the 1199 Pandemic Resilience and Recovery Project. Her expertise spans geriatric psychiatry, dementia care, and healthy aging advocacy, with a focus on integrating technology and education to improve care for older adults and their caregivers.
Dr. Wehry holds board certifications in psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry. Her work emphasizes clinical training initiatives for healthcare workers, including Certified Nursing Assistants and medical students through programs like the Geriatric Education Mentor (GEM) Program. She also leads community outreach efforts, such as the Drop In with Dementia Action Alliance, fostering social support for individuals with dementia and their families.
Her research interests include age-friendly healthcare systems, reducing antipsychotic use in nursing homes, and leveraging technology to enhance patient care and caregiver support. Recent presentations highlight her work on post-pandemic resilience in long-term care settings and advancing communication skills in geriatric care teams.
Dr. Wehry has collaborated on over 15 peer-reviewed articles addressing dementia care innovations, geriatric education, and workforce development. Her advocacy extends to policy engagement, focusing on aging-in-place solutions and systemic improvements in elder healthcare.
