Dr. Susan Tighe is the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) at McMaster University and a Professor of Civil Engineering. She holds prestigious fellowships (FCAE, FCSCE, FEIC) and has led national/international research in sustainable transportation infrastructure. Her career includes roles as a Canada Research Chair, Director of the Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology, and Deputy Provost at the University of Waterloo. She has secured over $25M in research funding and authored 400+ technical publications.
Education: BSc (Chemical Engineering, Queen’s University), MASc/PhD (Civil Engineering, University of Waterloo). Chartered Director (DeGroote School of Business). Awards include the Sanford Fleming Award (Canada’s top civil engineering prize), Engineering Medal in Research, and 21 best paper awards. Recognized in Canada’s Top 40 under 40 and 80 Women to Watch.
Research focuses on resilient infrastructure, sustainable materials, and climate adaptation. She pioneered the 2013 Transportation Association of Canada’s Pavement Asset Design Guide. Current projects involve lightweight cellular concrete, polyurethane-bound pavements, and flood resilience. Supervised >100 graduate students and continues advising at McMaster.
Labs/Teams: Former leadership in the Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology. Collaborations span Canada, Africa, Chile, India, China, Australia, and New Zealand. Advocates for accessibility in engineering through CSCE’s President’s Task Force.
