Susan Surette is a part-time faculty member in the Department of Art History at Concordia University. She holds a PhD from 2014, focusing on ceramic murals at the Sturdy-Stone Centre in Saskatoon. Her research explores contested spaces in Canadian ceramic production, textiles, and craft, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to object-maker-consumer dynamics. She has taught ceramic and textile histories, craft theory, and graduate-level craft studies since 2008. Her work appears in journals like Métiers d'art/Craft Journal, Itineraire, and Journal of Canadian Art History, as well as museum catalogues. She co-edited Sloppy Craft: Postdisciplinarity and the Crafts (Bloomsbury, 2021) and her artworks are in major collections across North America and Europe.
Research interests include Canadian craft histories, material culture, and the intersections between art, craft, and decorative arts. Her interdisciplinary work bridges artistic practice and academic critique, challenging traditional disciplinary boundaries. Teaching focuses on historical methodologies and contemporary debates in craft studies.
