Dr. Susan Surette is a Postdoctoral Fellow at NSCAD University, focusing on postwar architectural ceramic murals in Canada and the concept of the gift in architectural ceramics. She holds a PhD in Art History from Concordia University (2014), combining academic rigor with over three decades of professional ceramic practice (1987–present) and textile making (1976–1986).
Her research bridges material culture, craft theory, and heritage studies. She has published extensively in journals, exhibition catalogs, and book chapters, while co-editing Sloppy Craft: Postdisciplinarity and the Crafts (Bloomsbury, 2015) with Dr. Elaine Cheasley Paterson. Her work has been presented at international conferences, and she serves on the editorial board of Cahiers métiers d'art - Craft Journal (Montreal).
As an educator, Dr. Surette has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on ceramic and textile histories and the decorative arts. Her artistic creations are held in public, corporate, and private collections across North America.
