Susan Sugarman is a Professor of Psychology at Princeton University, specializing in interdisciplinary studies between psychology and humanistic disciplines. She teaches 'Foundations of Psychological Thought,' cross-listed with the Program in Humanistic Studies. Her research critically examines Sigmund Freud's theoretical frameworks, particularly The Interpretation of Dreams, interrogating gaps in his arguments and their implications for modern psychological understanding.
Her recent book, Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams: A Reappraisal (2022), challenges conventional interpretations of Freud’s work by analyzing inconsistencies within his foundational text and its coherence with his broader corpus. This project emerged from an invited lecture at Oxford’s 19th Century Literature series, evolving into a rigorous investigation of Freud’s theoretical underpinnings.
Sugarman’s work bridges literary analysis, philosophical inquiry, and psychological theory, emphasizing the need for rigorous internal critique of Freud’s legacy. Her findings suggest potential revisions to how Freud’s theories are applied to understanding conscious vs. unconscious mental processes.
