Susan Silbey is the Leon and Anne Goldberg Professor of Humanities, Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, and Professor of Behavioral and Policy Sciences at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. She is affiliated with the Institute for Work and Employment Research (IWER) and the Anthropology Program. Her work focuses on governance, regulatory processes, and risk management in complex organizations, particularly in scientific and corporate contexts.
Education: BA in Political Science (Brooklyn College), MA and PhD in Political Science (University of Chicago).
Research interests include the sociology of law, regulatory governance, and the interplay between legal frameworks and scientific practices. Her recent work examines how organizations manage risks like ethical lapses and environmental hazards. Notable books include *The Common Place of Law* (1998) and works on law and science (2008).
Her articles analyze organizational compliance, safety practices, and regulatory dynamics. Recent publications address lab safety, big tech regulation, and pragmatic approaches to accountability.
Awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship (2009), MIT’s Killian Award (2019), and honorary doctorates. She has mentored numerous graduate students and contributed to initiatives like the Schwarzman College of Computing.
