Kenneth Oye

Kenneth Oye is a Professor of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He serves as Director of MIT's Program on Emerging Technologies (PoET), a member of the MIT Synthetic Biology Center and MIT Center for Biomedical Innovation, and Director of Policy and Practices for NSF SynBERC. His research focuses on technology policy, governance of emerging technologies, and international relations, with a particular emphasis on synthetic biology, gene drives, and biopreservation. Oye has advised the UN Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), WHO, President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), and National Research Council.

Education: BA in Economics and Political Science from Swarthmore College (highest honors), PhD in Political Science from Harvard University (Chase Dissertation Prize recipient).

Research interests include proactive governance of emerging risks, adaptive risk regulation, and ethical implications of biotechnology. Notable projects include frameworks for gene drive governance, biopreservation technologies, and regulatory strategies for synthetic biology. His work bridges academic research with practical policy, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration.

Recent articles highlight trends in biopreservation governance, gene drive ethics, and adaptive licensing in pharmaceuticals. His contributions to risk innovation and regulatory adaptation reflect a focus on balancing technological advancement with societal safety. Awards include MIT’s Levitan Award for Excellence in Teaching (2011) and the Graduate Council Teaching Award (1998).
