Susan Rottmann is an Assistant Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern Maine, affiliated with the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Her work focuses on migration, gender, transnationalism, and ethics, particularly in European-Turkish spaces. She leads the HORIZON 2020-funded RESPOND project, studying migrant experiences between Syria, Turkey, and Europe.

Research interests include the anthropology of ethics and food, migration, film, human rights, and religion-politics dynamics. Her book In Pursuit of Belonging (2019) explores ethical life narratives of Muslim women in transnational settings. She integrates field research and student collaboration into her teaching, emphasizing critical engagement with social science theories.
Funding: Recipient of grants from the Fulbright-Hays DDRA, Social Science Research Council, Wenner-Gren Foundation, American Research Institute in Turkey, and Institute of Turkish Studies. She currently resides in Istanbul but remains deeply connected to Portland, Maine.
Personal interests: Sci-fi/fantasy literature, cooking, film, animal care, and global travel.
