Dr. Susan Peterson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Petroleum Engineering & Geology at Marietta College, affiliated with the Environmental Engineering school. With 35 years of experience, she specializes in risk analysis, decision methods for economic models, drilling engineering, and probabilistic modeling. She teaches Engineering Economics, Drilling Engineering, and Risky Business courses.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering, Texas A&M University
- MS in Petroleum Engineering, Texas A&M University
- BSPE in Petroleum Engineering, Marietta College (1983)
Research Interests: Dr. Peterson focuses on applying risk analysis and decision frameworks to optimize drilling projects, cost/schedule models, and well design. Her work spans industries including oil/gas, agriculture, transportation, defense, space, power, and entertainment. She emphasizes probabilistic modeling for strategic planning and risk management.
Professional Contributions: She co-authored the Petroleum Engineer’s Handbook chapter on “Decision and Risk Analysis” and has published technical papers on drilling engineering. She served on the Society of Petroleum Engineers' Global Drilling Advisory Committee and is an active member of SPE and AADE. As faculty advisor for Marietta’s AADE chapter, she mentors students in drilling engineering.
Distinctions:
- First female Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M
- First female rig-site supervisor for Marathon Oil’s International Drilling
- First female Petroleum Engineering instructor at Marietta College (1984–1990)
Labs/Teams: Engages students in applied projects through her courses, blending academic rigor with industry-relevant training in drilling and risk analysis.
