Susan Meld Shell is Professor of Political Science at Boston College, holding a permanent Visiting Professor position in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. She earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University after completing a B.A. at Cornell University.
Her research specializes in modern political theory and German idealism, with particular focus on Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Heidegger. Professor Shell has authored several influential works including 'The Politics of Beauty: A Study of Kant’s Critique of Taste' (2022) and 'Kant and the Limits of Autonomy' (2009).
She has held visiting positions at Harvard University and received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, American Council of Learned Societies, Bradley Foundation, DAAD, and Radcliffe Institute. Her publications demonstrate sustained engagement with political theology and philosophical interpretations of major thinkers.
Professor Shell teaches graduate seminars on Rousseau, Nietzsche, Leo Strauss, and the relationship between philosophy and politics at both Boston College and the University of Chicago.
