Paul Franco is the Barry N. Wish Professor of Government and Social Studies at Bowdoin College, currently on leave for the 2025–2026 academic year. He specializes in political philosophy and contemporary political theory, with expertise in figures like Hegel, Nietzsche, Rousseau, and Michael Oakeshott. Franco holds a PhD from the University of Chicago, an MSc from the London School of Economics, and a BA from Colorado College.
His research focuses on the history of political thought, particularly exploring themes of freedom, enlightenment, and ethical philosophy. He has authored influential books on Oakeshott and Hegel, and co-edited volumes on Strauss and modern political theory. Teaching includes courses on modern political philosophy and Nietzschean thought.
