Susan L. Bane is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the State University of New York at Binghamton. She holds a BS in Chemistry from Davidson College (1980) and a PhD in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University (1983), followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Virginia (1984-85).
- Education: BS (Davidson College), PhD (Vanderbilt University)
Her research in Chemical Biology focuses on microtubules and their interactions with chemotherapeutic agents like Taxol and colchicine. She investigates molecular mechanisms of drug binding, site-specific fluorescent labeling of proteins, and the structural dynamics of microtubules using organic synthesis and spectroscopic techniques (absorption, emission, NMR). Her work aims to improve anticancer drug design and develop tools for live-cell imaging.
Analysis of her articles reveals a sustained emphasis on microtubule-targeted therapeutics, fluorescent probe development, and conformational studies of tubulin-drug complexes. Recent publications highlight bioorthogonal chemistry, boron-nitrogen heterocycles, and oxidative stress detection in cellular systems.
Current lab projects include designing simplified Taxol analogs, elucidating colchicine-site interactions, and creating novel fluorescent sensors for biomolecular carbonylation. Techniques span organic synthesis, protein purification, and advanced spectroscopy.
