Susan Kern

Susan Kern is an Associate Professor and Director of the Historic Preservation Program at the University of Maryland. Her research focuses on the intersection of history, museums, and the built environment, with a particular emphasis on slavery and race in early America. She holds a Ph.D. in American History from The College of William & Mary, an M.A. in Architectural History from the University of Virginia, and a B.A. in Liberal Studies from West Chester University.

Her research explores how historical sites, monuments, and public spaces shape collective memory. Her award-winning book The Jeffersons at Shadwell reconstructs the social and material history of Thomas Jefferson’s childhood plantation, highlighting the experiences of enslaved communities. Her current work examines early 20th-century preservation projects and their impact on narratives of American history, particularly regarding slavery.

Dr. Kern has led archaeological research at Monticello and previously directed the Historic Campus at William & Mary. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges history, material culture studies, and museum practices.
