Whitney Nell Stewart

Whitney Nell Stewart is Associate Professor at UT Dallas with joint affiliation at the Edith O'Donnell Institute of Art History. Her award-winning research examines plantation landscapes, material culture of slavery, and public history representations. Her monograph 'This Is Our Home' analyzes how enslaved people created domestic spaces within oppressive environments.

Research explores the contested meaning of 'home' through architectural analysis, artifact studies, and archival records. Current book projects investigate wine production's connections to slavery and the historical interpretation of Texas plantations. Stewart actively consults for cultural institutions including the National Park Service and San Antonio Museum of Art, focusing on ethical interpretation of difficult histories.
