Christa Dierksheide serves as the Brockman Foundation Jefferson Scholars Foundation Professor and Associate Professor of History at the University of Virginia, specializing in the interconnected histories of slavery, race, and empire across the Americas during the 18th-19th centuries.
Her research centers on the ideological frameworks of slavery and abolition, particularly how concepts of "improvement" shaped proslavery and antislavery discourses in plantation societies. Current projects include a global history of Thomas Jefferson's multiracial descendants and collaborative work on founding-era slavery struggles, reflecting her expertise in transnational racial histories and the legacies of colonialism.
Prior to her academic appointment, she curated landmark exhibitions at Monticello including The Boisterous Sea of Liberty (2008), Mulberry Row: Landscape of Slavery (2012), and Sally Hemings: A Life (2018), demonstrating her commitment to public history and material culture analysis. She currently co-teaches Race and Slavery on UVA's North Grounds, bridging archival research with institutional memory.
