Susan James is a Professor of Philosophy at Birkbeck, University of London, and a distinguished scholar in the history of seventeenth and eighteenth-century philosophy, particularly the work of Spinoza. She has held leadership roles, including Chair of the Philosophy Department at Birkbeck (2003–2006) and Chair of the Faculty of Philosophy at Cambridge University (1997–1999). A Fellow of the British Academy (2019) and former President of the Aristotelian Society (2015), her research bridges early modern philosophy, feminist thought, and the social and emotional dimensions of human existence.
Education: PhD from New Hall, Cambridge, with early work on social explanation. Her seminal works include Passion and Action (1997), redefining the role of emotions in early modern philosophy. Current projects include reviving interest in Margaret Cavendish and exploring the philosophical insights of painter Nicolas Poussin.
Research emphasizes practical application of theoretical knowledge, exemplified in her analysis of Spinoza’s concept of fortitude. She mentors globally influential scholars and actively contributes to academic communities like the London Spinoza Circle.
