Susan Franceschet is a Professor in the Department of Political Science within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary. Her academic career focuses on gender politics and political representation within parliamentary systems.
Her educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science from Carleton University (2001), an MA in Political Science from Carleton University (1997), and a B.A. in History from the University of Manitoba (1994).
Franceschet's research centers on women's political representation, parliamentary dynamics, and cabinet appointments, with particular attention to how gender shapes political institutions and processes. Her work examines the structural barriers and opportunities for women in political leadership roles across different institutional contexts.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on gendered aspects of executive politics, particularly cabinet formation and ministerial appointments. The research spans comparative cases including France, Spain, and North American contexts, demonstrating her expertise in cross-national analysis of gender and political representation.

Franceschet leads the SSHRC Insight Grant-funded project 'The Motherhood Dilemma in Parliamentary Politics' (2019-2024), which investigates how motherhood affects women's political careers and how parliaments adapt rules to accommodate new parents. She teaches courses including POLI 397 Introduction to Research Methods and POLI 453 Women and Politics.
