Karen Beckwith is the Flora Stone Mather Professor in the Department of Political Science at Case Western Reserve University. Her research focuses on comparative political parties, party leadership, cabinet formation, political movements, and the comparative politics of gender in the United States and Western Europe. She holds a PhD from Syracuse University (1982) and has authored/co-authored four books, including Cabinets, Ministers, and Gender (2019) and Women’s Movements Facing the Reconfigured State (2003).

Her current research examines political loss in social movements, gender dynamics in parliamentary leadership contests, and women’s political representation amid party system changes. Beckwith has been funded by the NSF, NEH, and the European Consortium for Political Research. She co-founded the Cambridge Studies in Gender and Politics book series and Politics & Gender journal.

Beckwith advises students on senior capstone projects and provides guidelines for letters of recommendation. Her work bridges feminist theory, comparative politics, and institutional analysis, emphasizing gendered dimensions of political power and representation.
