Susan Edmundson is a faculty member at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville since 1997, affiliated with the Department of World Languages and Cultures. She specializes in French Civilization, cultural/political history, and innovative language education. Her roles include Interim French Language Program Director, developer of the French hybrid program, and leader of UT's Paris Summer Program (2016). She holds a Ph.D. in French Civilization (New York University, 1995) and a B.A. in French Studies (Northwestern University, 1987).
Research interests focus on intersections of French cultural history with politics, notably 20th-century French cinema and extreme-right intellectual movements. She actively contributes to language pedagogy through online program development and workshops on hybrid teaching methods. Notable presentations include discussions on American films and French critics (1930s) and strategies for hybrid language courses.
Teaching spans all levels from Elementary to Advanced French, including specialized courses like French for Reading (graduate students) and Grammar/Composition. She has led professional development workshops for high school teachers and contributed to conferences such as MLA and MIFLC.
