Susan Cu-Uvin is a Professor of Health Services, Policy and Practice at Brown University’s School of Public Health, and a Professor of Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Alpert School of Medicine. She serves as Director of the Brown Global Health Initiative and Principal Investigator of a D43 HIV and Cervical Cancer Training Grant with Moi University in Kenya. Her leadership roles include directing the Providence/Boston Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and previously leading the Immunology Center at The Miriam Hospital.
Her research focuses on HIV in women, particularly antiretroviral therapy’s impact on genital tract viral dynamics, HPV-related cervical/anal dysplasia in HIV-positive women, and microbicide development. She leads studies on HIV transmission prevention, including mucosal immunity and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Her work integrates clinical, translational, and global health perspectives, with a focus on reducing health disparities in resource-limited settings.
- Education & Training: Extensive global health training programs, including the Fogarty International Center’s AIDS International Research and Training Program.
- Grants: PI/Co-I on NIH-funded projects studying HIV reservoirs in genital tracts, cervical cancer prevention in Kenya, and hormonal influences on HIV susceptibility.
- Awards: Recipient of the Constance B. Wofsy Women’s Health Investigator Award for her work in the AIDS Clinical Trials Group.
Her research has advanced understanding of HIV transmission mechanisms, genital tract immunology, and the intersection of HIV with co-infections like HPV. She collaborates internationally, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, to address cervical cancer screening and treatment gaps among HIV-positive populations.
