Dr. Susan Clarke is an Associate Professor and Reader in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen's University Belfast, specializing in bone repair and biomaterials development. Her research focuses on novel therapies for bone repair, including stem cell therapies, marine-derived bioactives, and biomaterials for orthopaedic applications. She collaborates with the Schools of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Dr. Clarke holds leadership roles, including Chair of the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Board and Chair of the QUB Athena SWAN Network. She supervises PhD students in bone biomaterials and clinical orthopaedics. Her work is funded by grants such as DfE and NICRF seed funding and the Dunhill Medical Trust. Awards include the 2016 Best Paper Award from the Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine.
Her academic roles include teaching modules like Evidence-Based Nursing 2 and Applied Life Sciences. Current research projects explore patient predictors of stem cell response and strontium-releasing resorbable devices. Completed projects include studies on calcium phosphate cements and marine-derived bioactives. Dr. Clarke actively participates in national and international conferences, editorial boards, and mentoring initiatives like SistersIN.
