Suresh Sudarsan

Suresh Sudarsan serves as Head of the Integrated Fermentation Platform at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). His research drives innovation in microbial metabolic engineering and sustainable bioproduction, directly contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals through resource-efficient biomanufacturing solutions.

His expertise spans Microbial Metabolic Engineering, Synthetic Biology, and Sustainable Biomanufacturing, with deep focus on optimizing Escherichia coli and Yarrowia lipolytica systems. Key investigations include NADPH redox balancing, transcriptional network modeling, ocean water utilization for cellulose production, and activation of cryptic metabolic pathways under genetic perturbations. His work integrates systems biology, machine learning, and fermentation science to engineer cell factories with industrial relevance.

Recent publications reveal strong trends toward sustainable process design, particularly in decoupling freshwater dependency through marine resource utilization and digital twin integration for bioprocess scale-up. His research consistently bridges fundamental metabolic insights with industrial applications in biopolymers and single-cell protein production.

Sudarsan mentors five active PhD candidates across DTU projects, including Uma Shankar, D. D. (ocean water cellulose production), Funder, M. T. (methane fermentation for protein), and Laborda, V. P.
