Sunniva Collins

Sunniva Collins, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Associate Dean of the Office of Professional Programs at the Case School of Engineering, Case Western Reserve University. She joined the faculty in 2013, following an 18-year career at Swagelok Company, where she held roles including Senior Research Fellow and engineering management positions. Her expertise spans materials science, design, and manufacturing, with a focus on surface hardening, corrosion resistance, and aerospace materials.

• Education: PhD & MS in Materials Science and Engineering (Case Western Reserve University, 1994 & 1991), BA in English Literature (University of Michigan, 1983)

Research interests include surface engineering of materials, low-temperature carburization, and material fatigue analysis. Her work has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the ASM Engineered Materials Achievement Award (2006) and R&D 100 Award (2008). Collins has led projects funded by the Department of Energy, Ohio Department of Development, and DARPA/NRL, focusing on advancing materials for industrial and energy applications.

She is a Fellow of ASM International and Alpha Sigma Mu, and served as ASM International President (2014–2015). Her patents include innovations in low-temperature carburization and conduit sensing technology.
