Sunila S. Kale is a Professor at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS) at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on Indian politics, the political economy of development, yoga studies, energy politics, and informal labor. She teaches courses on South Asian politics, capitalism, and contemporary India.
Kale holds a Ph.D. in Government from the University of Texas, Austin (2007) and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Chicago (1995). She is currently the President of the American Institute of Indian Studies.
Her research interests span the intersections of political theory and development, with a focus on energy infrastructure, mining politics, and yoga’s socio-political dimensions. Her recent book The Yoga of Power (2024) explores how yogic ethics shape development policies in India.
Notable awards include the Joseph W. Elder Prize (2013), multiple Fulbright grants, and a Distinguished Teaching Award nomination (2017-18). Her grants have supported research in India and course development on capitalism.
Kale advises MA students and has supervised research on topics like CSR in extractive industries and tribal land rights. She collaborates with institutions like the Simpson Center for the Humanities and the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies.
Her work appears in journals like Journal of Peasant Studies and Foreign Affairs, and she has edited special issues on energy politics and rural dispossession. She maintains affiliations with JSIS centers focused on global studies, human rights, and South Asia.
