Sunil Sharma is a Professor of Persianate & Comparative Literature at Boston University, serving as Director of the Center for the Study of Asia (BUCSA) and the Global Medieval Studies Program. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and specializes in premodern Persian and South Asian literatures, focusing on poetry, court cultures, the history of the book, and travel writing. His research explores intersections between gender, identity, and power dynamics in Muslim contexts.
Key works include Mughal Arcadia: Persian Poetry in an Indian Court (2017) and the collaborative Three Centuries of Travel Writing by Muslim Women, which examines gendered dimensions of Muslim identities through travel narratives. He teaches courses on Persian literature, medieval travel writing, and world literature.
Sharma has directed interdisciplinary projects and co-edited volumes, emphasizing recovery of marginalized voices in literary history. His academic leadership includes service as President of the Association for the Study of Persianate Societies (ASPS).
