Lubaaba Al-Azami

Lubaaba Al-Azami is a Lecturer in Shakespeare & Early Modern Literature at the University of Manchester's Department of English and American Studies. Her research focuses on the Global Renaissance, early modern drama, travel literature, and transculturality, with particular attention to premodern racecraft, trade, religion, and gender.

She is the Founding Editor of the AHRC-funded digital platform Medieval and Early Modern Orients (MEMOs), dedicated to premodern English encounters with Islamic Worlds, and Founding Convener of Network of Sisters in Academia (NeSA), an international support network for Muslim women academics.

Her first monograph, Travellers in the Golden Realm (John Murray, 2024), examines England's early connections with Mughal India and their impact on global identity formation. Current projects include a second monograph on Indian queens in Renaissance drama and a co-edited critical edition of Titus Andronicus for Cambridge University Press.

Al-Azami’s work has been praised for its interdisciplinary scope and engagement with underrepresented narratives, as highlighted by reviews from scholars such as Simon Schaffer and Josephine Quinn.
