Sunil Rodger is a multidisciplinary social and health researcher affiliated with the Competition and Markets Authority in digital regulation, while maintaining a visiting researcher role at Open Lab, Newcastle University. His PhD in Digital Civics, conducted between Open Lab and the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University, focused on urban accessibility and technologies for civic engagement through mixed-methods studies with powered wheelchair users.
His research intersects sociology, urban studies, disability studies, human-computer interaction, and political science, with a particular emphasis on how technologies shape society and are appropriated for activism. He has contributed to large-scale public engagement projects like Metro Futures, which influenced the design of the Tyne and Wear Metro's new train fleet through immersive digital tools and workshops.
His collaborative work with Nexus and Stadler led to tangible outcomes, including policy changes, arts commissions, and recognition through the Global Light Rail Awards. Sunil's methodological approach combines ethnographic fieldwork, digital platforms, and experiential data synthesis to address transport exclusion and promote inclusive urban planning.
