Professor John C. McCarthy is a leading academic in Applied Psychology at University College Cork, where he was appointed in 2013 and served as Head of School until 2020. He previously held roles such as Vice-Head for Teaching and Learning in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences (2014-2018) and Chair of the College Academic Development Committee. Educated at UCC with a BA, PhD, and MATLHE, he worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of York and Lecturer at the University of Limerick before returning to UCC in 1992.

His research explores the intersection of technology, lived experience, and design, focusing on how digital systems can be co-created with marginalized groups such as people with dementia, their carers, and urban/island communities. Key contributions include experience-centred design (with Peter Wright), emphasizing emotional, aesthetic, and cultural dimensions of technological encounters. Current projects, funded by the Lero SFI Centre, investigate responsible software engineering as a social and political concern.
His 15 most recent publications span human-computer interaction, participatory design, and psychological theory, with a focus on dementia care, digital civics, and the emotional impact of technology. Collaborations include Open Lab at Newcastle University and interdisciplinary teams across computer science, sociology, and design.
