John McCarthy is Professor of Applied Psychology at University College Cork, Ireland, where he leads the People and Technology research group. He maintains active visiting positions as Research Fellow at Open Lab, Newcastle University UK, and previously held visiting appointments at Sodertorn University College in Stockholm and with the Interaction Design Centre at University of Limerick.
His research focuses on understanding how emerging technologies influence people's lived experiences, with particular emphasis on designing usable and enriching technologies. Current work centers on developing technologies and services for vulnerable populations including older adults with dementia and individuals with health-related difficulties. His approach prioritizes making lived experience a primary reality in technology design and discourse.
McCarthy has published extensively in human-computer interaction, including two books on conceptualizing user experience and critically engaging with contemporary methods of experience-centered design. His most recent significant work involves the Ticket to Talk mobile application designed to facilitate intergenerational interactions through digital media. His research methodology often involves participatory design with end-users as experts on their own experiences.
Through his People and Technology research group, McCarthy investigates how technology design can be oriented toward what matters to people who live with these technologies, particularly focusing on maintaining agency in social settings for vulnerable populations. His work bridges theoretical frameworks of human experience with practical design applications in healthcare and social contexts.
