Dr. Stephen McCarthy is a Lecturer in Information Systems at University College Cork's Cork University Business School, specializing in Business Information Systems. He holds office in the O'Rahilly Building on campus and maintains active roles in both teaching and research.
His research program focuses on three interconnected areas: shared understanding and control in digital innovation networks, the design of human-centred IT systems, and examining the 'dark sides' of technology use including problematic smartphone usage patterns. His scholarly work has appeared in premier journals such as Information Systems Journal, The Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Internet Research, Information Systems Frontiers, Information Technology & People, and Computers in Human Behavior.
Dr. McCarthy serves as an Associate Editor for Communications of the Association for Information Systems and the Journal of Decision Systems, and as a Guest Editor for the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems. He regularly presents and serves as an Associate Editor at major international conferences including the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), Hawaii International Conference on Systems Science (HICSS), and European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS).

His collaborative research projects, valued at over €3 million, involve partnerships with IBM, Laya Healthcare, the Health Service Executive (Ireland), the Danish Board of Technology, Missions Publiques (France), and Strategic Design Scenarios (Belgium), supported by funding from the European Commission, Science Foundation Ireland, the United Nations, and Enterprise Ireland.
