Professor Sunil Bhatia is the Lucy Marsh Haskell '19 Professor of Human Development and Chair of the Department of Human Development at Connecticut College since 1999. He holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Pune, India, and an M.Ed. and Ph.D. from Clark University. His research focuses on cultural psychology, identity formation in global and transnational contexts, narrative theory, and ethnography. Notable works include American Karma: Race, Culture and Identity in the Indian Diaspora (2007) and Decolonizing Psychology: Globalization, Social Justice and Indian Youth Identities (2018), the latter earning the William James Book Award and an honorable mention for the Qualitative Book Award.
He serves as associate editor of the Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology and sits on multiple editorial boards, including American Psychologist. Recognitions include the 2014 APA Fellowship and 2024 election as President of the Society of Qualitative Inquiry in Psychology. His community efforts include co-founding Friends of Shelter Associates (FSA) to address sanitation inequities in Indian slums, linking psychological constructs like dignity and safety to material conditions.
Bhatia’s teaching spans courses like “Globalization and Cultural Identity” and “Decolonial Psychology.” He has delivered over 25 keynote addresses globally and contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Awards highlight his contributions to racial justice, including the 2009 Martin Luther King Jr. Faculty Award for social justice advocacy.
