Dr. Sung Hyun Yun is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Windsor, currently on sabbatical until December 2025. Born in Busan, South Korea, he holds a PhD from the University of Georgia, an MSW from the University of South Carolina, and a BA from Pusan National University. His research focuses on gender-based violence, mental health, cross-cultural studies, and psychometrics, with an emphasis on vulnerable populations such as immigrants, refugees, survivors of violence, and individuals with addiction issues. He integrates advanced quantitative methods and scale development into his work to inform evidence-based social work interventions.
His research explores anti-oppressive frameworks and pro-feminist approaches, addressing societal challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration. Notable projects include examining intimate partner violence dynamics, the impact of childhood adversities, and the efficacy of community-based interventions for male survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Dr. Yun has secured significant grants, including a SSHRC Partnership Development Grant ($191,382) to study male survivors’ help-seeking behaviors post-COVID-19.
Teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses on social work practice, violence, and research methodologies. His publications emphasize technology-driven solutions, such as improving survey response rates in sexual assault centers, and cross-cultural studies on violence prevention. His work bridges academic knowledge with real-world applications, advocating for marginalized groups’ mental health and societal equity.
