Sun Joo Kim is the Harvard-Yenching Professor of Korean History in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Yonsei University and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in history from the University of Washington.
Research Interests: Her work focuses on the socio-cultural history of Chosŏn Korea (1392–1910), including regional discrimination in northern Korea, popular movements, micro histories of marginalized groups, law and society, slavery, and art history. She is committed to digitizing underused primary sources for global accessibility.
Projects & Initiatives: She leads projects such as the Harvard Korean Alumni Biographies Project, Gateway to Premodern Korean Studies, and Korean Treasures at Harvard, which explore Korean diasporic histories and cultural heritage. Collaborative workshops on Korean art history and premodern studies further highlight her interdisciplinary engagement.
Awards & Grants: Notable recognitions include the ACLS Collaborative Research Fellowship, Korea Foundation Advanced Research Grant, and SSRC Doctoral Fellowship.
