Professor Sumit Kane is a faculty member at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, where he leads the Social & Economic Determinants of Health department. He joined the Nossal Institute for Global Health in 2018 and previously worked at KIT Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, where he led public health education programs. His research focuses on health systems in low- and middle-income countries, including responsiveness, implementation science, and transitions in healthcare service delivery.
Key research areas include health systems responsiveness (in India, Ghana, Vietnam, and Australia), care-seeking pathways, family experiences of illness, and trust in the medical profession. He has also explored social and gender norms influencing reproductive health in South Sudan and contributed to improving community health services in urban areas.
Since 2011, he has held an honorary professorship at the Gokhale Institute of Politics & Economics in Pune, India. Sumit advises bilateral/multilateral agencies and NGOs on global health issues and has designed curricula for Master's programs at KIT. His work bridges operational, systems, and social perspectives to inform actionable solutions for equitable healthcare.
