Sukhmander Singh is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering at Santa Clara University. His work focuses on geotechnical design, geology, and environmental geotechnics, particularly in waste containment systems and earthquake impacts on landfills.
- Ph.D., UC Berkeley (1979)
- M.S., Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (1966)
- B.S., Panjabi University (1964)
His research explores the seismic behavior of waste containment systems, landfill liner integrity, and dynamic soil properties for municipal solid waste. Publications highlight advancements in environmental geotechnics and soil dynamics under earthquake loading.
Recent publications analyze centrifuge modeling of seismic effects on landfills, dynamic shear modulus relationships, and liner integrity post-earthquake. These works span geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, and soil mechanics.
- Researcher of the Year Award (1997)
- Distinguished Alumni Award (1997)
- Special Recognition Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Service (1996)
- Citizen of the Day Award (1977)
- Outstanding Immigrant Award (1977)
- Special Certificate from Alyeska Pipeline Company (1976)
- Scholarship for M.S. studies (1964-1966)
- Gold Medal for M.S. thesis (1967)
As a visiting professor at Cambridge University (1997 & 2003), he contributed to soil dynamics research. He has taught courses in geology, geotechnical engineering, and landfill design.
