Sujata Mahajan is an Assistant Instructional Professor at the University of Chicago, specializing in South Asian Languages and Civilizations. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Deccan College (1998) and M.A. degrees in Marathi (University of Pune, 1985) and Linguistics (Deccan College). Her research focuses on historical developments in the Marathi language, lexicography, semantics, pragmatics, and language contact with Kannada, Persian, and other languages.

Mahajan has pioneered studies on discourse markers in Indian languages and is currently developing an online encyclopedic dictionary of Dalit ātmākathan (autobiographies) in Marathi. She teaches first-year, second-year, and advanced Marathi language courses.
As a literary figure, she has authored eight books of fiction, poetry, and short stories, including a state award-winning poetry collection and a novel award received during her teenage years. Her translation work includes a biography of Kannada poet Mahakavi Kuvempu into English.
