Prof. Sugata Ghosh is a Professor in the Department of Economics & Finance at Brunel University. His research focuses on growth theory, macroeconomic policy, development economics, and the impact of fiscal policies on economic outcomes. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, following earlier degrees from institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru University and Presidency College.
His academic qualifications include a BSc (Economics) from Presidency College, Calcutta (1985), MSc (Economics) from the University of Calcutta (1987), MPhil degrees from Jawaharlal Nehru University (1989) and the University of Cambridge (1990), and a PhD (Economics) from the University of Cambridge (1994).
Prof. Ghosh's research emphasizes the interplay between public spending, fiscal policy, and economic growth. His work explores topics like the heterogeneous effects of public investment, the role of corruption in fiscal outcomes, and the composition of government expenditures. He has collaborated extensively with scholars such as Andros Gregoriou and Iannis Mourmouras on these topics.
His publications reflect a sustained focus on empirical and theoretical contributions to macroeconomic policy, with notable work on public goods, congestion effects, and fiscal rules. He has been awarded a Leverhulme Fellowship (2001–2003) for research on fiscal policies and growth.
Prof. Ghosh has served as a referee for top journals including the Journal of Economic Growth and the Economic Journal, and regularly participates in major conferences such as the European Economic Association Meetings.
