Sueann Caulfield is a Professor of History and Residential College at the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). She serves as Director of Graduate Studies in the History Department and Co-Director of the Global Feminisms Project. Her research focuses on modern Brazil, with an emphasis on gender, sexuality, race, and legal history. Caulfield holds a Ph.D. in History from New York University (1994).
Her affiliations include the Donia Human Rights Center (as Co-Director and faculty associate), the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS), Program in International and Comparative Studies (PICS), and the Brazil Initiative Advisory Committee. She has held leadership roles in interdisciplinary programs and centers focused on global justice, gender studies, and Latin American studies.
Research interests span honor culture, legal modernity, race and family dynamics, LGBTQ+ rights, and feminist activism. Recent work explores the social history of legitimacy in 20th-century Brazil and transnational feminist movements. Her 2000 book In Defense of Honor examines how legal and cultural discourses around honor shaped modern Brazilian identity.
Publications include over 30 peer-reviewed articles and co-edited volumes analyzing gender, sexuality, and race in Latin America. Her work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary debates about human rights, legal reform, and social justice.
Caulfield has received institutional support for research projects from the University of Michigan and external grants. She advises doctoral students in History and interdisciplinary programs, contributing to training the next generation of Latin Americanists and gender scholars.
