Dr. Julie McCandless is Co-Director of Postgraduate Research and LLM Pathway Lead for Health Law at the University of Kent’s Kent Law School. She holds LLB, LLM, PhD, and PGCTLHE qualifications. Her research focuses on family law, reproductive rights, and feminist legal theory, challenging traditional family models in legal frameworks. She co-leads the Northern/Irish Feminist Judgments Project, reinterpreting case law through a feminist lens. Dr. McCandless previously taught at the London School of Economics, Oxford Brookes University, and Keele University, and has contributed to EU policy analysis on surrogacy law. She currently co-directs the Centre for Sexuality, Race and Gender Justice.
Education: LLB (First Class Honours) from Queen’s University Belfast (2002), LLM (Distinction) from Cornell Law School (2004), PhD in Law from Keele University (2010).
Research interests include birth registration reform, healthcare law, and socio-legal approaches to gender and sexuality. She has published widely on parenthood law, assisted reproduction, and feminist legal theory. Her recent work examines civil registration systems and their alignment with diverse family formations.
Professional roles include Articles Editor for Feminist Legal Studies (2014–2017), and collaborative activism on law reform projects. She advocates for legal systems that reflect contemporary family diversity, particularly in birth certification and parenthood recognition.
Labs/Teams: Co-director of the Centre for Sexuality, Race and Gender Justice at Kent Law School. Collaborates with over 100 academics, activists, and artists through the Northern/Irish Feminist Judgments Project.
