Dr. Sue Smith serves as Course Leader for the Dance & Choreography BA(Hons) program at Falmouth University, where she has worked as an Associate Lecturer since 2017 after previously teaching at Dartington College of Arts. She also held leadership roles including Executive Director of Dance in Devon (2015-2021) and Associate Director at CandoCo Dance Company.
Her educational background includes a PhD from University of the Arts London (2016) and an MA in Choreography from Dartington College of Arts (2011). Dr. Smith's research centers on dance-health intersections with specialized expertise in falls prevention, cancer survivorship, mental health for vulnerable populations, and disability inclusion. She pioneers interdisciplinary improvisation practices and place-based co-creation projects that foster sustainable communities through arts engagement.
Her significant awards include the prestigious Clore Fellowship (2016) and Rayne Fellowship (2005), recognizing her leadership in arts and community development.
Dr. Smith actively shapes the field through her Chair position at People Dancing and board membership at Gecko Theatre. She has developed impactful community initiatives including Dance for Cancer, Best Foot Forward (falls prevention), All Aboard (for young disabled people), and Arts On Call (addressing isolation). Her professional network spans One Dance UK, sector partners across health/community sectors, and international collaborations with institutions in Iceland, Ireland, and Portugal.
