Sue Samuels is the Director of Bands and Coordinator of Music Education Studies at Furman University, her alma mater. She previously served as Director of Bands at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) for 14 years, where she oversaw the Marching Blazers, Wind Symphony, and Symphony Band. During her tenure, the Marching Blazers grew significantly and gained national and international recognition. She also created the UAB All-Star Band Festival and annual Honor Band festivals, impacting hundreds of students annually. Prior to UAB, she held roles at Randolph School and high schools in Georgia and Virginia, leading bands to consistent superior ratings and national championships, including the 1998 Marching Band Grand National Championships with Lassiter High School.
Dr. Samuels holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from Auburn University, an M.A. in Conducting from Georgia State University and Eastman School of Music, and a B.A. in Music Education from Furman University. Her professional focus integrates teaching, conducting, and music education advocacy. She has directed bands at multiple institutions, emphasizing performance excellence and community engagement through festivals and collaborative events.
