Professor Sue Garton serves as Co-Director of the Aston Centre for Applied Linguistics and Interim Associate Dean for Education at Aston University. With a PhD from Aston and MSc in Teaching English, her career includes international teaching experience at Italian universities prior to joining Aston in 2000. She is a National Teaching Fellow recognized in 2015.
Garton's research examines:
- Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) pedagogy and policy
- Language teacher education and professional development
- Classroom discourse and interaction patterns
- Native-speakerism in international education contexts
Her publications consistently address global English teaching practices, teacher identity formation, and cross-cultural education policy implementation. Recent work emphasizes primary-level language instruction challenges across diverse international settings.

Garton coordinates PhD supervision and teaches undergraduate/postgraduate modules including Approaches to Course Design, Teaching English to Young Learners, and TESOL studies. She co-edited the Routledge Handbook of Teaching English to Young Learners and leads multinational research projects on primary English education.
Her research unit focuses on international language policy implementation and regularly collaborates with the British Council on global education initiatives.
